Playwright to Playwright on the Canadian Play Thing is an interview series that connects emerging writers to playwrights that have influenced their work! On Jan. 28, Sarena Parmar (Toronto) interviews Tara Beagan (Calgary). Join us live as they delve into the playwriting mind and share scene readings from their plays. Audience Q&A at the end.

Writing adaptions with new cultural context.

Working with organizations in innovative ways.

The playwrights will discuss their play adaptions "Orchard (After Chekov)" & "Miss Julie She'mah" and how they were received by their family. Also: how to navigate the profession in more inclusive ways with creative contracting and different approaches to working with organizations.

TARA BEAGAN
Tara Beagan is a Ntlaka’pamux and Irish “Canadian” halfbreed. She is cofounder/codirector of ARTICLE 11 with Andy Moro. A11 has worked across Turtle Island, in Aotearoa, Australia and Scotland, and is based in Mohkinstsis. Beagan served as AD of Native Earth Performing Arts from Feb 2011 to Dec 2013. She’s been in residence at Cahoots, NEPA, the National Arts Centre, Berton House and now at Prairie Theatre Exchange. Seven of her 32 plays are published. Two plays have received Dora nominations, with one win. In 2020 Honour Beat won the Gwen Pharis Ringwood Award and Beagan the Siminovitch.

SARENA PARMAR
Originally from Kelowna BC, Sarena is an actor and playwright. Her first full-length play, The Orchard (After Chekhov) premiered at the Shaw Festival, making Parmar the first South Asian playwright produced in the festival’s history. The play had a second production at the Arts Club Theatre in Vancouver and is now taught in universities across Canada and America. She is currently working on her next play as a Playwright in Residence at Tarragon Theatre. Sarena is an acting graduate of the National Theatre School and Birmingham Conservatory of Classical Theatre (Stratford Festival).
